In 1961 people wore so ignorant:

so a commercial to Winston Cigarettes seems normal to them. Today everybody knows that cigarettes are poison .

Your statement assumes the position of suggesting that ignorance somehow capped off a time ago... Which could be construed as ignorance in and of itself.

No, his statement doesn't 'assume the position of suggesting that ignorance somehow capped off a time ago'. He's saying that back then people didn't know what we know now. That was a really dumb statement.
