Viral Puma Ad

This ad is from the early 2003. PUMA officials denied that they made this ad and threatened to sue anyone who posted it. In January 2006 Peter Kim (ex PUMA International Marketing Manager) solved the mystery aroud this viral ad:
What really happened - a small Eastern European agency affiliated with Saatchi & Saatchi created the ads on spec, trying to win business with a PUMA subsidiary. They got nothing and emailed the ads to friends; from that point it snowballed. As you can guess, when the PUMA powers-that-be decided to get all corporate on the blogosphere, the whole thing exploded. Poor Pete M.'s (PUMA GC in the US) email inbox exploded with junk after that, with his name being on the cease and desist. No "Brazilian Maxim", no evil master plan (they're real but we'll say they're fake), but online store sales were up like CRAZY for a couple of weeks. Too bad we didn't even have the shoes in the ads in stock!

whats the name of the puma collection, on the picture?
THIS is the proplem of socity today. its advertising like this that is the cause of premarital sex, and rampant teenagers involving themselves in sexual activity that should not be tamperd with until marriage. Young people are growing up too soon there innoncenc is being takern away younger and younger. A 12 year old will see an advert like this and understand what is going on, that is real concern. Then we get ourselfs in all kinds of trouble, STDS, single parents, children without there father and so on, then we wonder why young people are so angry, and vent out there fustration in there enviroment causin trouble and so on. Think of all the promblems we cant prevent by not giving in to our lusts. Advertising like this does not help the socity keep sex, whitch is a precious and beautiful thing and not just a physical act that has no effect on ones mind, personality and most seriously ones soul. Our morals and values are faiding away, we seem to accept anything these days. Advertising is very powerful so please use this power for good and use it to portray positive things, and build morals and respect and images that protects young peoples mind.

Although one should be careful with where the ad is placed, to limit the exposure to our young ones, I think it's a great ad altogether :D
I think these comments are funnier then the actual ad, to blame all of these problems on a couple of subliminal ads is ridiculous. Obviously it only does harm but the society has to be fundamentally flawed (like we are, and i include myself in the we) before we can see it expressed in the media.

This image is a very well done and it is very imaginative. However I can understand the concerns surrounding this image as expressed by some of those who have responded to this image. Some of you like this picture and some of you believe it to be degrading but in a way all of you feel both intrigued and disturbed by this picture. It is hard to believe I know but natural human nature can not be avoided all of us feel the same urge to fear what is different be intrigued by something new and feel and eternal lust for love.

Nich, I feel what you are saying. Kids are not stupid these days, they are subjected to more sexual images than before. Anyone who says things like "the female should have swallowed" and "nothing is wrong with this ad" do not have descent morals. Hope these people don't have daughters on their knees at the very same time they make these stupid comments.

That ad is not creative, but obvious. It's the easiest solution, which required the least thought. It is disgusting and demeaning to both the male and female in the shot.

Interesting reading the comments here. Ive found that perception is projection. You see what you want. The comments here are just information about the observers state of mind. I see a poor bloke whose just severed some nerves with a bad gash to his hand from a broken milk bottle. Quite nasty. There was of course spilt milk. But lets not cry about that! if this is really from puma then its very degrading to humans. All that it says is, anyone who wears puma is a filty animal. Only animals do this to the public.
A company like Puma should think about the wellfare of the society and not things like this.

Both the act that is pictured and all other kinds of sexual acts included. But in advertising i think it is fair to say that women are usually portrayed doing these acts. The man is of course also stereotyped as the "typical"man, virile, high sex drive, etc. It places both in unrealistic categories. And like someone else said, why the fuck is she the one on her knees? Because that's where society expects her to be in an advertisement like this. You don't expect her to be the one receiving oral sex. That would put her in a position of power. If this advert was real, it would be targeted at MEN. Do you really think that a picture with a woman on her knees with some guys cum on her leg is going to make women want to buy fucking puma shoes?

But her style of dress (short tartan skirt, cropped top, fishnet stockings combined with the sneakers and the cutsie bag) is clearly tapping into pornographic ideas surrounding so-called "lolitas" that have become popular in adult films.
